Quitting’s not an Option– My Guest, Twana Johnson, Business Owner of Runway Redi Boutique, Gym Owner of Fit Wit Twana, and Adversity Overcomer.
“People don’t care how much know until they know how much you care.”
Most of us will have some moments in our life that turn out as planned. This week’s guest shares her impactful story of how she had carved out the life she had wanted with hard work and determination, but lost it all, which gave her the greatest gift of all.
Growing up she was the youngest of five and Ms. Johnson explains how being the youngest, you had to be tough. Her mother and father were very supportive in her endeavors and when Twana decided she would pursue a college education and become the first person in her family to graduate college her family stood behind her.
At the age of 19, she became a mother and this only made her more determined to be successful. Without question this made things more difficult, but Twana only found this challenge to be motivating. It won’t take long to realize Twana embraces adversity and finds strength during the tough times with her faith.
You cannot miss this incredible person’s journey from having everything to becoming instantly homeless and then her amazing journey back! “Falling down is an accident, staying down is a choice.” If this episode doesn’t inspire you to get up and get after life…Nothing will.

Politics vs. Perspectives – This week I attempt to walk the line of between politics and keeping things in perspective.
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” ~ H. Keller
Shying away from tough topics is never the way to support positivity. However, some topics need the right tone and perspective to be received. I don’t think I’m stretching it to say that politics and religion can be the two topics that are many times left untouched in mixed company. This got me to thinking about why that is and how I could bring something to the table on the topic.
It is my feeling that most people find themselves becoming emotionally attached to these topics because, for many of us, it is those things that help mold our identity. To question one’s religion or politics can be seen as questioning their very existence. In addition to this perspective, I feel like people are tribal in nature. To find the group that we fit in with means we have validation to our convictions.
I would never suggest that anyone should be less passionate about their personal convictions. Nor should they capitulate to the pressure of following the majority. It is our individuality that gives us the flavor to life. I would hate to think that everyone saw the world the same as me and liked all of the same things I like. Many times in my life I was completely certain of some things and couldn’t find a way to see things differently. However, in time and with some different experiences, I found myself having a complete change of heart about certain things. Some real world examples are addiction, homelessness and education to name a few.
The only way we can allow for opposing perspectives and ideas is to allow discussions of opinion. This means that we avoid feelings of emotion and jointly understand that different opinions shouldn’t mean we have a lack of respect or love for the other person, but rather we simply have a different opinion. I truly hope that you find this episode enlightening and thought provoking.

From Rodeo to Addiction – My Guest, World Champion Bareback Rider, Davy Ross.
“Addiction is giving everything up for the one thing.”
It feels obvious to say that being a cowboy isn’t for the faint of heart. My guest this week found an immediate connection to the rodeo at the age of 5 when he heard a person talking about the rodeo on the radio. It wasn’t until a few years later that he got his first shot at riding in the little britches circuit. At the age of 11, Davy was getting his feet wet with bull riding and at that time sustained his first serious injury when he broke his arm after being bucked off a bull and then to add insult to injury the bull stepped on his broken arm. For most kids, this would have been enough to give them second thoughts about being a cowboy, but not Davy. Instead he was back out there riding with a cast the very next weekend.
Davy explains as the years went by he tried other events at the rodeo and found his talent and calling with bareback riding. It was in that event that Davy rose through the ranks to eventually become a 2 time World Champion. Clearly he was hooked on riding and this was made obvious by how often he would ride, sometimes as many as 9 events in a single week.
Along the way, Davy continued to mount up injuries that were accompanied sometimes by surgeries and usually some type of pain killers. As the injuries piled up, Davy didn’t realize how dependent he was becoming to the opioids. Suddenly he noticed that he was taking more and more pain killers everyday just to feel normal and he was having to buy them off the streets to match his dependency.
Once he could no longer afford his pill habit he turned to shooting up heroin and then he saw his once storied life spiral out of control eventually landing him homeless in the streets of Memphis. How he found refuge in God and turned his life to even make it back to pro riding is nothing short of a miracle. This story needs to be heard by everyone!

Time to Cowgirl Up – My Guest, Ms. KC Johns is a budding country music artist.
“Find out who you are and do it on purpose.” ~ Dolly Parton
This week’s guest was born to perform and compete. Ms. KC Johns grew up as the baby of the family and from the earliest of ages she knew she loved to perform for an audience.
KC’s mother was a rodeo star with her award winning barrel racing and when KC was very young she decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps. KC would race on weekends and sing anytime any time she had an opportunity. KC admits that she was not quite as good of a barrel racer as her mother but the one thing she kept emphasizing was how supportive her mother continued to be regardless of her endeavors.
When KC received her first guitar as a gift, her path suddenly became more clear. Without a second thought KC’s mother sold personal items to help fund KC’s pursuit of becoming a country music artist. Regular trips to Nashville to allow KC to perform in local venues and bars at the age of 17 set KC up for opportunities. When she received an offer to perform on a cruise ship she jumped at the chance. What was supposed to be a temporary gig turned into a 6 year adventure. KC explains how those years were pivotal to developing her unique style of music and songwriting.
KC shares how life on the road can be challenging and how important it is to get some good people in your corner to help you reach your dreams. Living a life full of adventure and thrills comes at the expense of traveling constantly, but it’s like everything in life, to achieve great things you must be willing to work hard, sacrifice and remain disciplined. I am excited to see what comes next for this country star. If you are in the area you can find her tour schedule at www.kcjohns.rocks/tour

Hope Over Hate – My Guest, Mr. Jaylon Smith.
“Defining moments are never determined by those things that happen to us, but rather, what we do next.”
In this week’s conversation, my guest is 17 year old Jaylon Smith and he shares how growing up without his mother and father in his life he found himself lashing out and feeling angry at the world. At the age of one, Jaylon was sent to live with his uncle and aunt down in the small town of Byhalia, MS. Jaylon explains how his uncle and aunt provided for him growing up and eventually moved to Horn Lake, MS, to be closer to other family and his school of choice.
Jaylon states that even though his uncle and aunt showed him love and provided for him he always felt a void in his life not having a relationship with his mom and dad. He describes how his mother was in an abusive relationship with his father and knew that raising her son in that environment would be worse for Jaylon. Jaylon’s father was an active member of the Memphis gang, the Bloods, and Jaylon tells how his visits to his father exposed him to drugs, prostitutes and other violent gang activity before the age of 10. By the time he reached his early teens Jaylon was full of hate and would fight anyone at any time. This behavior kept him in trouble and it wasn’t until a school counselor intervened just before a fight at the school and encouraged Jaylon to take a different path. It was then that Jaylon felt like for the first time in his life that maybe his life actually meant something.
As he continued to be mentored by his new friend, the counselor, Jaylon was then introduced to who God was. Through football, his new counselor friend and the church Jaylon started to make better choices and change the trajectory in his life. This new found hope all nearly came to an end on a Christmas evening at the age of 16 when his father showed up at the house and started causing problems with the family. Jaylon grabbed a gun and intended to protect is family but at that moment he received a call from his preacher and one could make the connection that was nothing less than divine intervention.
