Season 37 Amazing Race – My Guests, Mark Crawford and Larry Graham, Retired Memphis Firefighters and Team Red on Amazing Race.
“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.”
This week’s guests met when they were young and while in their twenties they both joined the Memphis Fire Department.  They spent their career saving lives and serving their community.  On their off time they enjoyed riding their Harleys and spending time with family.
Mark had been on a reality show known as Broken Skull Ranch with host Stone Cold Steve Austin.  Applying for a reality show was second nature to Mark, but this was very different for Larry.  That said, Larry was game to try so they applied for The Amazing Race Season 36.  They ended up being tagged as alternates and never made it on the show last season.  Not being deterred, Mark and Larry signed up again the next season and this time they made it.
Our conversation covers their early years and how they met, but then they share how what all they experienced, what it was like applying for the show, the rules that they had to follow and what it was like to have an adventure together that took them halfway around the world to China.  Even though they only completed one leg they had no regrets going on the show and Mark shares that he would be interested in doing something else in line with a reality TV competition.  However, Larry said, one was enough for him and he will be there to cheer his friend on.
My takeaway is this, life is not intended to be a spectator sport.  Get out there and take chances and enjoy the years you have because life is too short.  Mark and Larry are great friends, they are great leaders and most of all, they great guys and I know you will enjoy this episode!

In this jam-packed episode of Cannonballing Life, Coach and Derrick dive into milestones, music, and mayhem. Derrick celebrates the 6-year anniversary of SRP Studios becoming a licensed LLC and reflects on the journey so far. He also recaps two major events: the 100th episode taping of The Rhythm Section Podcast at Rooster’s Blues House Highland and DJing the DeSoto Arts Council’s Back Porch Party with Thrive Entertainment—an event that may lead to exciting new opportunities.
Coach shares the wild story of a black bear spotted roaming through DeSoto County, then reads email questions from listeners that spark discussions on the reality shows they’d thrive on. And finally, Coach wraps things up with an unforgettable (and slightly messy) story from a pool party with his grandkids.

There are Many Paths to Success – My Guest, Dr. Michael Heindl, President of Northwest Mississippi Community College.
“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” ~ Pele
Many seniors in high school will feel the pressure of adulthood looming and may think they have to have things figured out before they start college or the workforce.  My guest this week shows how pursuing different paths can still lead to great success and every experience has value.
Dr. Michael Heindl started out in Community College with several career options on his mind.  He considered becoming a doctor at one point, then he pursued his degree in psychology and eventually he became a lawyer.  All of these paths gave him tools in the tool box that would all come in handy as he soon branched into education.
Dr. Heindl shares how a suggestion from a friend and an opportunity lead him to different leadership positions within several organizations before being presented with a chance to become the president of Northwest Mississippi Community College 8 years ago.  His love for athletics and music showed through with his enthusiasm of how far the colleges respective programs have come from over the last decade.
It would be fair to say that he has a love and a passion for his community and the many different possibilities for different careers that the college offers.  When it comes to leading by example, Dr. Heindl is as good as it gets and it will be exciting to see what is in store for the future.

Doing The Impossible – My Guest, Savannah Crittenden, high school math teacher and 200 mile ultramarathoner.
“Not all who wander are lost.” ~ Tolkien
My guest this week embodies the idea of doing the impossible, thus the title.  As someone that has ran 34 marathons, two ultras and an ironman triathlon, I cannot even start to wrap my head around running 200 miles over the course of 3 days.
When someone decides to challenge themselves they should set the bar so high they can’t even imagine how it could true.  I’ve said many times, when you shoot for the stars and miss you will still hit mountain tops.  Well I feel like it is safe to say that Savannah definitely set her bar high when she decided to tackle Memphis’ first 200 mile ultra.
Savannah shares how she ran her first 5k in her late 20’s and like all things in life, you can’t know if you like something unless you try.  Well, suffice it to say, she felt an immediate connection to running and as the years went on she continued to push herself.  She went from 5k to 10k to half marathon and then to marathons.  Eventually, Savannah decided to go for a 100 mile ultra and after much preparation she was able to complete this incredible goal.
However, like most people that are driven Savannah knew she would only be limited to what she believed could be possible.  So when she was challenged to run the first ever 200 mile ultra in Memphis, she couldn’t resist the opportunity.
You do not want to miss how Savannah not only faced the challenge of doing such an incredible distance, but she overcame insane odds when Mother Nature decided to throw all the runners a massive curveball.

Key The Recipe for Success – Coach Camp solo episode, Hard Work, Determination and Self-Discipline.
“Where will you be when you realize you are the only person standing in your way of becoming what you dream to be?” ~ Coach Camp
It’s that time of year when both high school and college students walk across the stage to receive a diploma that signifies years of hard work, dedication and the completion of a chapter in their life.
I was sitting at the Southwest Tennessee Community College graduation when I was struck by a moment of inspiration.  I’ve come to learn that many times in my life I was being taught lessons for life or developing tools for the tool box, but maybe in the moment I didn’t connect the dots to understand the context of the message.
So with this in mind I decided I would sit down with only the mic this week and share how some of my life lessons and experiences gave me focus and inspiration to carry on even when I didn’t feel like there was a clear path to follow.  This message is not only for graduates, but I feel everyone can take something from this and apply it to their life.
My culminating message hits with the three most important ingredients one most possess to stay the course and find ultimate success in life.  Those tools being hard work, determination and self-discipline.  There are many other ingredients one most carry, but in my opinion these have been the three that have been the most impactful.

Key Ingredients We All Need – My Guest, Grant Reid, Firefighter/Paramedic, Handy Man, Husband and Father.
“There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.” ~ C. Powell
This week’s guest shows how having a solid blend of generations past and current times expertise, can best prepare you to lead a productive life.  Growing up, Grant had a strong influence about the value of hard work from his Grandfather.  Watching how his Grandfather provided for the family and was always willing to explore opportunities gave Grant the confidence to push himself out of his comfort zone.
In addition to his strong family bond Grant also had a huge influence impressed upon him from growing up as a boy scout eventually reaching the highest level one could reach, Eagle Scout.  Knowing how to work hard and problem solve are essential skills that everyone needs in order to be successful in life and Grant had embraced both.
Grant shares how he and his wife took the ride together as he pushed himself out of his comfort zone to pursue his love for helping others.  Grant admits that academics are not his strong suit but he wasn’t going to allow his struggles in a classroom to prevent him from becoming a firefighter/paramedic.  Not only was he able to complete his paramedic program but he did it in a year that he welcomed his baby boy into the world.
Grant stands as a great example of Gen Z and he shows that hard work, perseverance, adaptability and a big heart can overcome much of what life might throw at you.  I am completely convinced that our future is in good hands with the guests that I’ve interviewed in this series and I look forward to seeing what comes next for each of them.
