Going My Way – My Guest, Retired Memphis Firefighter, Mr. Lynn Miller.
“There are all these moments you think you won’t survive, and then you survive.”
In 1971, the world was very different than the one we know today.  I know that hitchhiking is very taboo in today’s world, but back in the early 70’s hitchhiking was a common way of traveling across America.
My guest this week, Mr. Lynn Miller had just finished Air Force tech school in Wichita Falls, Texas, and had started his long journey from Texas to Tennessee via his thumb out.  Originally, he had planned to fly back home but after someone broke into his locker at tech school and stole all of his money he decided to just hitchhike home.  Wanting to surprise his family on his return he decided to keep his trip home a secret.
Most of us can admit that at the age of 19 we often don’t make the best of decisions.  In this case, Lynn could get some grace from the fact that hitchhiking was an accepted form of travel during that time.  Starting out early in the morning he started his long, arduous trip of over 1000 miles.  He shares how the majority of his trip was mostly uneventful chipping away at the distance little by little until he found himself less than 22 miles from his house when things took an incredible turn.
At approximately a day and a half into his trip it was about 2am when he found himself being kidnapped by 4 men and brought to a cabin in the Appalachian Mountains.  His daring escape will leave you on the edge of your seat.  You do not want to miss this week’s incredible story of survival and how he has used his second chance at life to have a huge impact for others.

A City for the Family – My Guest, Mr. Ken Adams, Mayor of Olive Branch, MS.
“Real leadership is about transforming limitations into possibilities.”
~ R. Sharma

The question is often asked, are leaders born or are leaders made?  Most people would say it can be either.  However, I would argue it simply comes down to making a decision.  Every day we are faced with making choices and those choices will mold the people that we will become.  In my opinion, becoming a leader is no different.
This week’s guest was given a great foundation in leadership from his early beginnings when he started working at Fed Ex in security.  During those years he also worked as a civil/criminal court judge.
Finally, after 38 years with Fed Ex and 25 years as a judge, he decided to try his hand in politics.  Mr. Adams had been a lifelong resident of DeSoto County and he felt a calling to serve the people.  So he made the decision to retire as a judge and go all in on running for mayor of Olive Branch.  Thus his logo, “All in Ken”.  He was elected to office in 2021 and has since been blazing a trail to make Olive Branch one of the best cities to live in in Mississippi.
Tune in to hear about all of the improvements that have come to Olive Branch since he entered office and what is planned for the future as Mayor Adams looks to grow the city and expand its resources.

Never Lose Hope– My Guest, Ed Stutler, Sergeant United States Marine Corp and Vietnam Veteran.
“Marines are built through the ethos of struggle and sacrifice.” ~ General James Jones
Sometimes when you aren’t sure what choice to make you just choose what makes the most sense in the moment.  My guest this week had aspirations of becoming an architect after graduating, but when the program at the school he wanted to attend was full he took hard shift and joined the military.  Mr. Ed remembers how the recruiter sold him on joining the Marines by saying, “if you want to come home alive then you should join the Marines.”  The Vietnam War had been ongoing for 5 years when he decided to enlist and the loss of American life was quickly mounting.
Not sure how his family would take the news Mr. Ed opted to not mention his enlistment to his family.  It was in actual basic training when his parents learned that he had joined the Marines.  This naturally didn’t go over well but at that point it was too late to change things.
It was only two weeks after basic training when they sent Mr. Ed off to war.  He had a brief stop in Japan before being sent to Chu Lai, Vietnam.  Once in country he was assigned to being a truck driver.  This meant he transported supplies to the troops on the front lines and he found himself in dangerous situations many times.  He spent 14 months in country before coming back to the states and it was back home when he started realizing that he was not the same person that he was before he left.
Tune in to hear how Mr. Ed found himself battling depression and eventually becoming an alcoholic before finding real help through therapy and finally coming to terms that he was dealing with PTSD.    Mr. Ed now works with the Fisher House Foundation which is a nonprofit organization that houses veterans and the family when receiving treatment at the VA.  His journey to recovery and his passion for helping others is certain to pull at your heart strings.

Pilot Down-Part 2 – My Guests, United States Air Force Pilot and Vietnam POW, Captain Ken Wells is joined by his wife Candy, to share their story.
“Freedom is the sure possession of those alone who have the courage to defend it.” ~ Anonymous

In this week’s episode I was blessed to not only have Officer Ken Wells on the show, but I was honored to have his wife as well.  Captain Wells was an F4 pilot for the Air Force.  He served from 1969 to 1978 and 466 days of that service was spent as a POW.
Honoring our veterans is something that we should all do, but equally we should honor their families that allow for the sacrifice.  Captain Wells shares with us how he and his partner found themselves in a dire situation when they ran their F4 out of fuel while still over enemy territory.  Once they had to eject there was no certainty that they would ever see their loved ones again.
Ken’s wife Candy was back home and 5 days away from giving birth to their first child when Ken’s plane went down.  Mrs. Candy was suddenly facing the difficulties of being a first time mom and possibly a widow.  Life was definitely never going to be the same.
Their story of survival and overcoming great odds is one that needed a two part story line in order to get a decent picture of what life was like for these two incredible patriots.  THE EXCITING CONCLUSION TO “PILOT DOWN”.

Behind Enemy Lines – My Guest, Army Veteran, CW3 James Williams served in the Army Special Forces during Vietnam deploying on three tours.
“For so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son should not parish but have everlasting life.” ~ John 3:16
You would be hard pressed to find a better American than my guest this week.  Mr. Williams grew up in a loving, God fearing family that taught him the value of hard work and discipline.
It was just after high school that Mr. Williams decided that there weren’t enough jobs to be had and with a young wife and child he needed to find something that could provide for his family.  So, without hesitation, Mr. Williams walked into a recruiters office and said he wanted to join the service.  In an ironic twist of fate, Mr. Williams thought he was entering the Marines but instead learned that he had actually entered the Army.  Out of basic training he was offered an opportunity to go to jump school so he figured that would be a good move because they got paid a little more.  Then during jump school he was offered a chance to join the Army special forces and became one of the first African Americans to join and he was 1 of 10 out of fifty to actually complete training.
When he graduated from Ranger school in 1965, he was immediately sent to the front lines of Vietnam.  This would be one of three different deployments to the war.  Sustaining a gunshot to the leg on one tour and having his hand badly injured by a grenade on another tour, Mr. Williams never lost his desire to be there for his fellow soldiers.  It was in 1969 when he finally returned home never to return to the war but then he faced an entirely new battle, that of PTSD.  It would be impossible to give a full description of our conversation but I can say without any question, YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS EPISODE!  God Bless our troops and God bless the USA!

Strength Through Faith – My Guest, Mrs. Tina Tatum is the owner of Coffee Central and Ethnos Coffee Roasters.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed individuals can change the world.  In fact, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
~ M. Mead
I once heard it said, “life is consistent, it’s predictably unpredictable.”  Regardless of how bad your life may be today does not mean that things have to stay that way.  My guest this week proves that everything can change for the better when you realign your priorities and put your faith in God.
Mrs. Tatum had battled drugs and alcohol for several years and despite her personal struggle, she remained vigilant in her job.  However, when she turned her life over to God she realized she had a much larger purpose on earth.  She knew that her future needed to be impactful in other’s lives and she wanted to focus on something that brought people together.  That is how she decided on opening a coffee shop.  Jumping in full swing in 2019 she quickly found herself testing her faith when COVID caused drastic changes to how business was done for everyone.
This proved to be a fruitful adventure and within a very short amount of time she was opening her second coffee shop in Hernando, MS.  Mrs. Tatum understands that using her success to build up others is where the true prize lies.  She proudly operates an all-female owned business and routinely speaks at events where she encourages women to be the curator of their future.
Mrs. Tatum’s story of overcoming some serious hurdles in her past to being a leader of tomorrow will leave you believing anything can be possible when you have faith followed by a never quit attitude.

Braveheart from Birth – My Guest, 14 Year Old Mirikil Stewart.
“Believe in YOURSELF and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is GREATER than any obstacle”
To put this week’s story into context I want to share a little bit about my depth of perception.  Having spent 4 years in the military and then over 20 years in fire and EMS, I’ve had the incredible honor of baring witness to dozens of amazing people that have overcome incredible odds.  I have so many examples that I could pull from when a person has done something that is life altering and motivational.  However, there have been very few times where I found myself speechless with inspiration from the first moment that I met them.
Ms. Mirikil Stewart stole my heart the very second I saw her warming up before our scheduled game.  Ms. Stewart was throwing the softball with her teammates as she prepared to compete against my team in 14u competitive softball team.  During birth, Mirikil sustained an injury that left her with limited use of her right arm.
Watching her catch the ball with the same hand that she would have to throw with was amazing, but little did I know that she was actually a baller!  We ended up playing her team twice in this tournament and she went 2 for 4 and made a diving play in the outfield in the first game and then she was the catcher in the second game.  She even threw a runner out stealing.  It’s not often that I find myself rooting for the other team, but how do you not when you realize you are seeing something special.
After our second game, I went over to her coach to inquire about this amazing young lady and her coach immediately started tearing up.  It is quite obvious how much of an impact she has had on the people around her and I can’t wait to hear how many people she will inspire as she continues her phenomenal story.

Time to Cowboy Up – My Guest, Professional Bull Rider, Lucas Mooningham.
“It’s the bulls and blood, the dust and the mud, it’s the roar of the Sunday crowd.”
I feel it is safe to say that a lot of times we will find all the ways we can fail at something before we find one way that we could be successful at something.  If we are being honest with ourselves, we will admit that it is easier to be pessimistic than it is to be optimistic.  Then if you add an element of danger to that challenge it can be even easier to walk away.
This week’s guest would be the exception to this train of thought.  At the age of 17 he decided that he wanted to give bull riding a try.  He didn’t have anyone in his life that had ever ridden bulls and only had informal training from the information he could find on the internet.  Mr. Mooningham’s father thought that if he let him try a ride then he might not be so interested.  Well, instead of deterring him from wanting to bull ride it actually solidified and validated his desire to pursue it full time.
Mr. Mooningham describes how he slowly grew his talent and eventually became a pro-rider that travels all over the U.S. competing in rodeos.  The determination, grit, perseverance, and passion can be felt as he describes his journey and where he hopes to take his career before having to hang up his bull rope.  If you want to follow his progress through the pro circuit and where he will be riding next, you can follow him on his Facebook page, Lucas Wade Mooningham.
