Dream Catcher– My Guest, Martin Fritz, Principal Engineer at Arizona Public Service.
“All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” ~ Walt Disney
I feel like most of us have dreams and ambitions when we are kids.  Then as we get older a funny thing happens, we settle into a lifestyle and those dreams will slowly fade for a number of reasons.  Maybe we start to doubt the possibilities of achieving those dreams or maybe we become comfortable and fear failing or maybe we simply can’t see the path to achieving those dreams.
Regardless of what obstacles are placed in front of us or what obstacles we think are in front of us, when we get older we simply lose that fearlessness needed to chase something that is not guaranteed.  Well, this week’s guest has never seen those barriers.  At some point in his life, he realized whether he subconsciously chose to pursue those dreams, or it just happened, he checked a ton of boxes.
Mr. Fritz grew up in the small European country of Austria and early in his life he dreamed of jobs in public service.  After graduating high school with a lot of college under his belt he entered the military.  After four years of military service he transitioned to firefighting and then flying helicopters and then security.  To say he was willing to take chances would be an understatement.
You will certainly be intrigued to hear all of Mr. Fritz’s life adventures and how at an early age he up and moved to America without knowing anyone in the entire country.  His zest for life is infectious and I can speak for myself when I say his courage to attack life is inspiring.

No Child Goes Hungry  – My Guests, Neil Colley, Billie Wilhite, and Sandy Marbry  work with the nonprofit organization, ‘Feed my Lambs Ministry’.
“If you cannot feed a hundred people, then feed one.” ~ Mother Teresa
It might come as a surprise to some of you that kids right here in America go hungry every day at school.  Even with reduced school lunch for those that qualify there will be kids that have nothing to eat all day at school.  There are probably a myriad of reasons why a kid would not have food to eat.  Whether it is the parents that simply don’t have the money to pay for the school lunch or they have a complete disconnect to responsibility.  The reason is actually irrelevant in my opinion
It was 2012 when Mrs. Jennifer Wilhite noticed that some students at Walls Elementary were going without lunch when she decided to investigate.  A few of the children didn’t have money in their lunch account and were going all day without eating.  Not being someone to just find a problem and draw attention to it, Mrs. Wilhite took action.  She brought her concern to her church and immediately found that others wanted to take action.  From that day forward she set out to make sure every kid that needed assistance would have something eat.
Initially, it was just 7 kids, but that number quickly grew over the years.  Eventually the ‘Feed my Lambs Ministry’ spread to include Lake Cormorant schools as well.  As the number of students grew, so did the number of volunteers.  The organization is funded completely by donations and every single dollar goes to help the children.  A fundraiser is being held on September 28th in the town of Walls to help with this effort.  If you want to learn more or even consider joining as a volunteer you can go to www.minor memorial.org/lamb

Life after Wilson’s Disease  – My Guest, Danette Smith, Ambassador at Mid-South Transplant Center.
“Organ donation is not a tragedy, but it can be a beautiful light in the midst of one.”
Most people will face an emergency or life alerting event at some point in their life.  It is never about what has happened to us, but rather what we do next.  I know you have heard several quotes like, “every dark cloud has a silver lining” or “my set back is nothing compared to my comeback”.  Having a positive mindset can many times determine how we make it through the storm.  Danette Smith would find herself having to draw on every positive thought she could muster and as she explains, she needed the help of her family and friends.
In 2016, Mrs. Smith started having a series of unexplained symptoms that would send her down a long road of seeing doctors and having tests ran to find out what was causing the issues.  Eventually, Mrs. Smith was diagnosed with a rare form of Stills Disease.  This condition is usually found in children but Mrs. Smith had developed this condition well into her adult years.
Several years went by with her managing this new illness in her life when she found herself becoming increasingly more sick, with new symptoms.  This again set her progress back and in 2021 Mrs. Smith found herself with a new diagnosis of Wilson’s Disease, which is an abundance of copper build up in the liver causing cirrhosis.  She explains how her condition continued to deteriorate until she was at death’s door.  A liver transplant was the only thing that could help and it was this tragic event that led her to become a volunteer and mentor for organ transplants.  Mrs. Smith could have easily considered herself to be the victim of some unfair breaks in life, but instead she sees her years of struggle as a gift that now she can use to help and encourage others to press on when life deals you a tough hand.

The Ultimate Sacrifice  – My Guest, Keith Norman, Retired Memphis Firefighter.
“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friend.” ~ John 15:13
It can go without saying that some jobs carry certain risks and when you choose those jobs it is important to consider the “what if’s”.  Being a firefighter on a busy department means that you are going to face dangers much more often.  This can actually be a benefit sometimes because you will gain a ton of experience in a short amount of time, but it can also be a detriment, because you will be put in difficult situations much more often
My guest this week not only faced those dangers on a regular basis, but he had family that worked alongside him on the same department.  Jeffrey and Keith were only separated by a few years and as the years went by, Jeffrey found himself following the path of his older brother.
Keith had been on the job for several years prior to Jeffrey joining.  It just so happened that Jeffrey and I came on Memphis together and got to know each other during fire school.  After we both graduated from fire school we were assigned to fire station 10 on South Parkway.  It was only 3 months after being assigned there that my Lieutenant was killed in the Frayser Dollar Store fire.  There was no way to know at that time how so many things would suddenly become intertwined.
Keith shares what life was like after his brother being killed on the job and how his brother’s last act on this earth was to shield his guy from the collapsing roof.  Jeffrey’s action saved a fellow firefighter that day and Memphis lost one of the good ones.

Twisted Tragedy  – My Guest, Teresa Silvestri, Life Long Paramedic and Courageous Matriarch.
“You will face many defeats in life, but never let yourself be defeated.” ~ M. Angelou

Sometimes in life our path starts to become clear when we have a moment that connects with us and we can see ourselves being part of the solution.  It was a moment like that which set Ms. Teresa on a path to become a healthcare provider.

In 1989, Ms. Teresa’s mother and her sister were involved in a horrible car accident which left her sister dead and her mother in critical condition.  So, in 1991, Ms. Teresa started down the path that eventually led her to getting her paramedic license.  Then in December of 2001 an incident took place that would forever tie us to a place and time.  I had only been a paramedic for 3 months when I responded to an accident scene as a volunteer first responder.  The accident happened to involve her 18 year old son, and it wasn’t until this episode that Ms. Teresa knew that I had been there on that day and road to the hospital in the ambulance.

Ms. Teresa’s story is unfortunately riddled with loss and tragedy, as you will hear in this episode.  However, it is her desire to keep moving forward, to keep living life, to lean on her faith, and is nothing less than incredible and truly an inspiration.

Habeeb Akande once said, “God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers.”  After hearing Ms. Teresa’s life journey, I am certain that you will agree that God certainly sees her as one of his strongest soldiers.

Quitting’s not an Option– My Guest, Twana Johnson, Business Owner of Runway Redi Boutique, Gym Owner of Fit Wit Twana, and Adversity Overcomer.
“People don’t care how much know until they know how much you care.”

Most of us will have some moments in our life that turn out as planned.  This week’s guest shares her impactful story of how she had carved out the life she had wanted with hard work and determination, but lost it all, which gave her the greatest gift of all.

Growing up she was the youngest of five and Ms. Johnson explains how being the youngest, you had to be tough.  Her mother and father were very supportive in her endeavors and when Twana decided she would pursue a college education and become the first person in her family to graduate college her family stood behind her.

At the age of 19, she became a mother and this only made her more determined to be successful.  Without question this made things more difficult, but Twana only found this challenge to be motivating.  It won’t take long to realize Twana embraces adversity and finds strength during the tough times with her faith.

You cannot miss this incredible person’s journey from having everything to becoming instantly homeless and then her amazing journey back!  “Falling down is an accident, staying down is a choice.”  If this episode doesn’t inspire you to get up and get after life…Nothing will.
