Echoes of Freedom: A Father’s War, A Daughter’s Song – My Guests, Cecil Brunson and Daughter Dr. Angela Brunson, share the harrowing experience of being a POW in the Vietnam War.
“The mind is the ultimate weapon, and hope is its ammunition.” ~
G. Coffee

This week I had the honor of sitting down with Lt. Colonel Cecil Brunson and his daughter Dr. Angela Brunson to talk about the Colonel’s war experience of fighting in the Vietnam War and his time spent as a POW at the infamous Hanoi Hilton.  His daughter adds an interesting perspective as she describes how music during captivity was used to both lift their spirits and to torture them.
Colonel Brunson was flying in an F4 the day he got shot down.  His chilling details of the moment he and his partner realized they had been hit and the slow motion play by play of the canopy lifting off and the two men ejecting at 23,000 feet will keep you on the edge of your seat.  Colonel Brunson’s capture, to his interrogation and eventual release will give you an entirely new concept of what it means to earn freedom.
Dr. Angela Brunson joins the conversation detailing how she was told about her father’s 5 ½ month POW stint and how the men kept up morale by singing hymns and holding church service.  This inspired Dr. Angela to do a deep dive into the healing nature of music and as a twist, the way his captors used music to torture the POW’s.
It was an incredibly humbling to spend some time with these two amazing people and recount the hardships and sacrifices of Colonel Brunson and the men that served in the Vietnam War.  The one thing everyone should know and understand is, freedom is most certainly not free.

Tuned In: Bob Bakeen’s Journey In Broadcasting – My Guest, Bob Bakken, is a broadcaster and columnist for DeSoto County News, MS.
“I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if only we will tune in.” ~ G. W. Carver
This week’s guest shares bis personal story of how he dreamed of being a professional broadcaster from a very early age and was known to do mock interviews and commentary as a small child.  Mr. Bakken describes how he allowed his curiosity of journalism to be his guide as he took advantage of different opportunities as they presented themselves.
Growing up in the cold tundra of Minnesota, Mr. Bakken tells of how his small town experience and being the oldest of 6, with the younger 5 all being girls, helped to mold him into the person he is today.  Being bold and fearless, Mr. Bakken took leaps of faith pursuing jobs that often kept him on the road and traveling further and further away from his hometown.
Eventually he landed his first professional broadcasting job when he took a position covering the double A hockey team called the River Kings.  This resulted in he and his wife moving to the deep south.  After three years Mr. Bakken moved around to several other broadcasting jobs until he landed with the DeSoto County News organization.  His inspirational journey from the North to the Mid-West to eventually landing in the south is a true testament of what it means to chase your dream and he gives a ton of credit for this being a possibility to his wife Jean.  Bob’s wife Jean is an incredible person herself and even has her business where she uses her artistic talent to tie balloon characters for kids.  If you are in the area you can find her on Facebook as Miss B-Loonie.

Total Health: A Message for the Mind, Body and Soul – Me, Your Host, Coach Camp – brings a message that anyone can benefit from.
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and portion forever.” ~ Psalm 73:26
I like to think that I’ve been rather proactive throughout my adult life about staying healthy and making decent choices that effect my health.  However, after a recent calcium score test, some unfortunate life events and a small bout of feeling lost and betrayed, I quickly realized that I had to be more intentional about all of my health.
I dive into things we should be aware of and how we can take steps to safeguard our mental health, as well as our physical health and our spiritual health.  Each area requires us to be mindful of all three and how we can give each of them the attention they deserve each day.
Most of my life I’ve been one that thinks of others first and my well-being usually takes a distant second.  The reality is, we can’t take care of those we care about if we are not healthy.
In this episode, I will talk about some of the things that create turmoil for our mental health and how we can adjust to have a better outlook on life.  I share how diet and exercises matter for a healthy body, but our genetics and family history must be in the conversation.  Lastly, I hit on what to me is the most important aspect of all three and that’s my spiritual health.  Regardless of your ethnicity, religion, culture or perspectives, I can assure you that you will take something from this quick episode and use it in your daily life.

On this episode of Cannonballing Life, Coach and Derrick dive headfirst into the chaos and comedy of everyday living. They kick things off with holiday food traditions—specifically questioning why cranberry sauce only sees the light of day twice a year. From there, Derrick shares the agony of spilling hot coffee while driving, leading to a hilarious breakdown of everyone’s worst “road beverage” moments.
Coach offers a personal health update before the show takes an unexpected turn with a surprise call from Mattie Camp. The guys then wander into a lively discussion about the Memphis Zoo, favorite animals, and the wildest creatures they’ve ever encountered. And because it is Cannonballing Life, the conversation naturally ends with UFOs and whether the truth really is out there.
Another unpredictable, laugh-filled episode where anything goes—and usually does.

Rhythm Without Limits: Music Unites Abilities – My Guest, Truman Wallace, is the Empowerment Coach and Founder at Truman Center of Hope.
“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” ~ J. Dean
My guest this week used his unfortunate accident at the young age of two to be his motivation in life.  Truman was born to a large family and his first two years was like most two year old’s, playing with siblings and testing his parents patience as he explored his world.  It was when young Truman was hit by a car that his entire life changed in an instance.
Truman shares how he went into full arrest a few times before the doctors could stabilize him.  After he was finally able to leave the hospital he continued battling a badly broken right arm.  As time passed Truman’s arm became twisted and eventually left him with limited use of his right arm.  This however did not stop him, it just forced him to do things differently than others to achieve the same thing.
By the time he was 13 he was leading his youth group at church and he had developed a profound love for music with the drums being his favorite.  Truman had been living his life to its fullest when he suddenly felt a calling to help others with disabilities.  This is why he started his nonprofit called “The Truman Center of Hope”.  Truman is determined to help others realize their true worth and he hopes to make his nonprofit his legacy that will go on for many years after he is gone.  If you would like to learn more about his organization or how you could help, you can go to www.tru/mancenterofhope.com or Truman @‌truman center of hope.

On this episode of Cannonballing Life, Coach and Derrick dive into a mix of celebrations, debates, and friendly humiliation. Derrick kicks things off with an update on his anniversary and the busy world of band rehearsals and upcoming music projects. From there, the guys launch into a spirited debate over one of the most controversial holiday topics of all time: How long should a Christmas tree actually stay up in the living room?
To wrap things up, Coach humbly recounts his latest marathon experience—one where he didn’t just finish… he finished dead last. The guys laugh their way through it all with the usual humor, honesty, and chaos listeners love.

Leading by Love: A Grandma, A CEO, A Heart Full of Purpose. – My Guest, Southaven Chamber of Commerce President, Debbie King.
“Alone we strong, together we are unbreakable .”
My guest this week shows us what being a leader is all about.  I was introduced to Mrs. King at a leadership conference and soon I learned that she was not only a community leader, but she was someone that knew how to do the right thing, even when the right thing was the hardest thing to do.
Mrs. Debbie King grew up in a very diverse family that taught her how to embrace the moment and not fear change.  She shares how her time spent at the casino’s actually molded her “can do” attitude and gave her a sense of loving the challenge.  She explains how every time a new opportunity presented itself she was quick to jump at it.  If nothing else, she wanted to be a perpetual learner.
After nearly 20 years in the casino business, Mrs. King was given an opportunity to go to work for the very young city of Southaven, MS.  Working at the Chamber of Commerce meant that she we would have to once again push herself out of her comfort zone and become very familiar with how to communicate with a diverse group of business leaders.
In 2021 Mrs. King was rewarded for all of her strong efforts and she was assigned as the President and CEO of the Southaven Chamber of Commerce.  This new role and challenge in her life inspired her to press forward and build an amazing team of people around her by which, she gives all the credit to for making her look good.  These roles and life progression would seem to be impressive enough, but it is in our last part of the conversation that you see how big her heart truly is.  When she was faced with adopting her two grandkids she knew that the road ahead wouldn’t be easy, but there was no way that she was going to walk away from this unexpected change.  Mrs. King is the shining example of what a mentor, a city leader and a loving person should be, and I know that you will be moved by her story, just as I was.
