Facing Giants – My Guest, George Visger, Former NFL player and CTE survivor.
“Don’t let the fear of the time it will take to accomplish something stand in the way of you doing it.” ~ E. Nightingale
When we are children we often dream of what it might be like to grow up and play pro sports. The reality is, very few will ever make it to the highest level and for those that make it, even fewer will have a long career at it, regardless of the sport.
This week’s guest was born with a competitive drive and desire to not only complete a task, but he has always been driven to be the best at whatever that thing might be. When he entered the pop-warner league of football as a kid he was immediately driven to be the best. As a smaller kid he had to work that much harder to prove his ability and in the 9th grade he sustained his first concussion.
In our two part interview George explains how looking back he can remember having 1000’s of incidents where he had momentary lapses of memory and moments of unconsciousness. By the time he was in college at the University of Colorado he and his friends were noticing some changes in personality and George had found himself getting into some trouble. George shares how one night he was out at a bar and the next thing he could remember he was sitting in a jail cell the next morning.
Once George completed college he was drafted by the New York Jets in 1980 as a defensive tackle. Later that season he went to play for the San Francisco 49ers and ended up winning the Super Bowl with them in 1981. His early success would unfortunately be cut short when he started to develop worsening symptoms from the years of head trauma and found himself being rushed to the emergency room for one of his eventual 9 life-saving brain surgeries. His fight for his life and eventual battle with the NFL to cover medical cost is what inspired George to write his book, “Facing Giants”.
George’s testimony and journey is definitely worth your time and even though his story is tragic I know you be inspired by his desire to help others and unrelenting fight for life. You can find his book and more about his story by going to http://www.georgevisger.com and you can also find his story on NFL’s “Beyond the Game” series.

Accomplishing the Impossible – My Guest, Connie Burton, is the Owner and Personal Trainer at Fitness 2000.
“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
This week’s guest found his passion for fitness at the very young age of 5. As Mr. Burton grew older his love for fitness grew stronger. Mr. Burton realized his passion for fitness actually went well beyond his own personal journey, he wanted to use all of his years of experience and knowledge to help others.
In December of 1990 Mr. Burton opened his gym “Fitness 2000” in Senatobia, MS. Using a small loan, he purchased the necessary equipment to get started and his initial intention was to help people become the best versions of themselves through a healthy diet and exercise. It wasn’t long until he started growing his client base and then he started to offer specialized training to athletes that were looking to enhance their talents in their chosen sport. Mr. Burton’s confidence in his ability to help others achieve whatever they set their heart to eventually led to one of the most transformational moments in his life.
A former client remembering Mr. Burton’s “can do” attitude about reaching your goals made a very unique request. The clients father had been in a tragic car accident and he was being told that he would never walk again. The client had asked Mr. Burton to see if he could work with his father and help him possibly walk again. Admittingly Mr. Burton stated that didn’t have any formal training in physical therapy or other versions of medical treatment, but he knew how the body works and he knew how to build strength and get results so accepted this request.
Mr. Burton not only helped that young man’s father to stand and walk again, but he has helped 100’s of people to overcome incredible odds over the years. You are sure to be left in awe of his incredible impact on his community and the miracles that he has been a part of. You can find and follow Mr. Burton on his Facebook page and witness his life transforming training through his many post and videos.

Divine Forgiveness – My Guest, Justin Mansfield, is a gun violence survivor and gracious soul.
“Forgiveness liberates the soul, it removes fear. That’s why it’s such a powerful weapon.” ~ N. Mandela
Justin’s story is a great example of how life could be going along fine and overnight your entire world can change drastically. Up until the age of 7, Justin had a normal childhood filled with family, friends, love and God. Growing up in a spiritual family Justin had a strong background in faith and was saved at the age of 6. Little could he have known at that time how much he would need to lean on his faith in the very near future.
At the age of 7, Justin was given the heartbreaking news that his dad had been killed in a hunting accident with his uncle. Justin and his siblings were devastated and his family had to find the strength to continue on. In a few years, his mother found someone new and soon Justin was introduced to the person that would become his stepdad.
Justin said that life was fine and the family remained strong together and his stepdad treated him and his siblings as though they were his own. This was the case until a camping trip changed everything. After his stepdad was seen doing drugs with some friends Justin’s mother decided to get a divorce. This caused his stepdad to lose it the night before the divorce was final and what happened next left the family picking up the pieces once again.
You don’t want to miss how Justin was able to find the strength to forgive, battle through addiction and eventually land on his feet with a mission to help others by sharing his journey.

Mentorship Matters – My Guest, Winter Wallace is a banker by day but a HOPE Center mentor every day.
“Spending time with children is more important than spending money on children.”
The question that high schoolers are often asked before they graduate is, “what are you going to do with your life?” This is a very understandable question because it is the first time in most people’s lives that they have to face their own decisions that will start to mold and shape the life they will live.
This week’s guest had the moxie to jump into life with both feet straight out of high school. Being one of 8 siblings she had plenty of influence and a large support system and she shares how her parents encouraged her to chase those things in life that she felt drawn toward. She took that advice and moved off to college several hours away from home to start her path to adulthood.
Mrs. Winter describes how she had ups and downs like we all do and how she used those life experiences to try and help others. Mrs. Winter found her footing when she connected with The HOPE Center of Northwest Mississippi. The HOPE Center is a mentorship program that invests in young people and helps guide them through some of their most influential years.
Her story is one that is both inspirational and impactful and the love she is sharing today will have an impact for many years to come. Her message to others is, don’t be afraid to step out there and be a part of the support system for others and in the end it will help you grow more than she could ever put into words.
