Memphis Wrestling OG – My Guest, Downtown Bruno Brown, Memphis and WWE Wrestling Legend.
“It’s like mama says… It BEEZ that way sometimes.”
*EXPLICIT LANGUAGE*
One of the best things about hosting a podcast is the opportunity to meet amazing and interesting people from all walks of life.  This week’s guest is definitely one in a million.  At the very young age of 14, Mr. Bruno Lauer happened upon a tent at the local fair that had a wrestling match going on.  This immediately peaked Bruno’s interest, but unfortunately it cost extra and he wasn’t allowed in.  By a stroke of luck he was invited to come in if he were willing to break down and clean up things after the matches were done.
Bruno quickly accepted that invitation and there was no way to know at that moment how life transformative that decision would be.  Once the clean-up was over he was invited to load up and go with the team to their next location.  Without a second thought Bruno loaded up and was off to his lifelong adventure.
Bruno shares with my listeners how his hard work landed him with the opportunity to become a manager.  Little would he had known at that time, but that was going to be the thing that would open more doors for him than he could have ever imagined.  When Bruno moved from Hawaii back to Memphis his career got a real shot in the arm when he became Jerry “The King” Lawler’s manager.
Bruno shares how he babysat Dewayne Johnson, AKA “The Rock” and how he travelled with Vince McMahon and eventually became the WWF Women’s Champion…for one day.  The stories were too many to list so you will have to tune in to hear everything.  If you would like to book Bruno for an event you can go to, Downtown Bruno Bookings and Media. If you or someone you know would like to get into wrestling you can go to,  Pro Wrestling Mid-South.

Building a Better You – My Guest, Ricky Pike, Coach/Owner at All Heart Jiu Jitsu.
“You are always more capable than you realize.”
This week’s guest found himself being drawn toward martial arts at a very early age.  His fascination toward the art of fighting grew as he got older and once he became an adult he decided to fully chase that dream when he happened upon a flyer posted in a breakroom at work.
Ricky started out by training others in the basics, but that quickly transitioned to training others how to compete.  As his skills grew and his coaching was becoming more refined, Ricky realized he had  the knack of connecting with and motivating young people.  This eventually led him to making the decision to open his own gym in 2019 in Senatobia, MS.
Ricky explains how teaching Jiu Jitsu is much more than just teaching some kids how to compete in matches.  Martial Arts give kids confidence, self-discipline, focus, respect and many times it gives his students a purpose.  Learning how to protect yourself is only part of the equation.  Learning how to be the be the best version of yourself is the true gift.
If you live in or around Senatobia, MS and you would like to learn more about how to become a member of All Heart Jiu Jitsu you can go to https://allheartgym.com/ and you can find Ricky on his weekly podcast called Anything is Possible (AIP) on Spotify.

In this hilarious and nostalgic episode of Cannonballing Life, Derrick and Coach kick things off with a spirited round of Let’s Make a Deal, sparking a deep dive into the golden age of game shows like The Price Is Right. Derrick shares stories from his first gig as a DJ and gives an update on his growing business, Thrive Entertainment. The duo also teases an upcoming KISS-themed concert Derrick is performing in—and just when things seem “normal,” an awkward story about breast milk sends the conversation completely off the rails. Expect laughs, memories, and maybe a little too much information.

Perspective and Persistence – My Guest, Whitney Lavender, From Bilateral Amputee to Ms. Wheelchair Texas.
“The difference between a mountain and a molehill is your perspective.”
It is no secret that some folks are dealt a bad hand in their youth.  When we are born into this world we can’t control who our parents are and how they will treat us.  For some, having a difficult childhood will set them up for eventual failure in life as an adult.  It is common to pass on from one generation to the next, our upbringing and experiences.
However, sometimes that tough childhood is preparing you for the trials and tribulations you will face as an adult.  My guest this week, Ms. Lavender, shares how growing up with an abusive mother conditioned her to be both mentally and physically tough.
Her mother left the family when she was still a kid and when her father was diagnosed with cancer she had to take on the role of the head of the house and got her hardship license to drive at the age of 14.  Caring for her sick father and her younger brother was actually easy in comparison to dealing with her abusive mother.
You will need to tune in to hear how Whitney battles through two abusive husbands, losing her father to cancer after a 16 year battle, and then in 2018 she receives a diagnosis that changes her life forever when she slips down some stairs injuring her leg.  After several months of seeing doctors and getting a myriad of treatments that never helped, she was diagnosed with a very rare disease know as, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.
If you are looking for  a story that will give hope and inspiration to just keep going, then look no further.  Ms. Whitney is the epitome of never quit, never give up!

On this episode of Cannonballing Life, Coach unleashes another classic rant—this time targeting the ever-declining state of customer service. Meanwhile, he and Derrick recap their time at The Hope Center’s Leadership Conference in Senatobia, MS, sharing takeaways and moments from the event. Derrick also offers an update on his business, Thrive Entertainment, and reflects on a recent Memphis Redbirds game. The duo also dive into a relatable (and slightly painful) discussion about close talkers and those mysterious people who speak just above a whisper for twenty minutes straight.

A Basket of Hope – My Guests, Ashleigh Parker and Tina James, are cancer survivors and teammates with “DeSoto Hope”.
“We want to make sure no one fights alone in DeSoto County.”
When a person receives a diagnosis of cancer they immediately know that their life has changed forever.  They may experience a myriad of emotions and sometimes they may experience all of them at once.  Some of the emotions may be a feeling of loneliness, confusion, anger or even depression.  Each person may have a different response, but the one constant is, you need some folks in your corner that sign on to take the journey with you.
My guests this week know this need all too well, as they are both cancer survivors. Starting with little resources and a modest team of two, Ashleigh Parker and Tracy Gallagher  decided to make baskets filled with items that they knew would be needed by folks going through treatments.  Working from their garage they had a vision, a dream and blunt determination.  They named their organization “DeSoto Hope” as they targeted the amazing citizens of DeSoto County.
As word spread the need for expansion was evident.  Slowly others joined the team, they moved to a larger location and before they knew it they were delivering baskets to over 700 families each year.  Perhaps an unintended benefit, the team soon realized that not only was it helping others by showing them that they understood what they were going through and someone was there that cared; the team found that by helping other’s they were even helping themselves.  There is just something therapeutic about helping someone else, even when you are going through difficult times yourself. Ashleigh Parker’s quote to her team is, “I did everything that was asked of me by my team and I fought as hard as I could.”
What started as a kind gesture has now become  a true movement.  If you or someone you know would like to learn more about this amazing nonprofit or if you would like to become a volunteer you can find more information by going to http://www.desotohope.org

In God’s Time – My Guest, Angela McCaleb, Hairstylist by day and Cancer Warrior by Choice.
“Cancer Sucks, God Doesn’t.”
The quote, “It’s not the amount of years in our life that matter, but rather the life in our years that matter most.” Ring more true with this week’s guest than anyone I’ve ever spoken with.
Mrs. McCaleb has lived a life of intentionality and direction since she was a little girl.  She shares how she met her future husband at the young age of 8 and in 8 short more years this young boyfriend became her husband when Angela turned 16.  Little could she have known that she would need those tools of maturity and toughness that she would develop in her early adult life.
In 2020 Angela suddenly woke up at 3am and had the feeling she needed to do a self-breast exam.  She googled how to perform the check and within a few minutes she found a lump.  She woke her husband up and told him she had cancer.  The next day they started the process of going to doctors and after her stage 2 breast cancer was confirmed, she received a double mastectomy and began radiation and chemo.  Once her treatments were complete she was given the all clear notice and life went back to usual.
Then in 2024 Angela started having severe lower back pain she was told it was likely sciatica.  She received shots and other therapy until the pain was going from her neck to her legs.  Angela explains that this was the moment she had to become her own best advocate and request some scans to be done.  The scans revealed that she had stage 4 bone cancer and would need to begin treatments again.  Angela’s unwavering love and care for other’s is evident by how many people have jumped in to lend a helping hand.  If you or someone you know has had or currently has cancer you will want to hear how Angela stays positive and continues to be a light for others while she continues the fight of her life.  At the end of our conversation she even took time to say a prayer for my daughter.  Thank you for all you do and keep fighting, your community loves you!
