Being a leader doesn’t mean you need an official title. Leaders are found in every facet of life and great leaders have a deep routed desire to help others. This week’s guest is the epitome of a selfless leader that does not require a title. Hernando’s Mayor, Chip Johnson prefers to go by Chip, and he is the most accessible Mayor that I have ever known. In our interview he tells about his humble beginnings, his time in the military, and the path that eventually led him to politics. Chip grew up in Desoto County and he never forgot where he came from. He explains some of the challenges he has faced and how he has endured. Chips discusses everything from running a cleaning company, to working in the mental health field, to losing an election, finding the love of his life, becoming a Grandfather and eventually being re-elected as mayor on the next election. Chip gives us a behind the scenes look at what has developed him into the person he is today and the person he is becoming Myself and SRP are forever grateful for the Mayor’s time and gracious interview. If you are a fan of leadership then I know that you will not only enjoy this interview, but I am certain that you will have plenty of takeaways you can use in your personal lives. Have you ever imagined yourself waking up early in the morning, driving to a trailhead that leads to a 6.3 mile loop, and then running in that circle for the next 14 plus hours for fun? Oh, did I mention that it poured down rain all night the night before which made the trail a total swamp? Well, that is exactly what I did on March 25th, 2023. However, I can honestly say that there wasn’t much fun about it. In fact, I seriously wanted to quit when I was about 8 miles in. I had to run this loop 8 times to reach my 50 miles and while I had trained better than before to endure a 50 mile trek, I was in no way mentally prepared for the obstacles that laid in wait once I hit the trial. Tune in to hear how I dug deeper than I ever thought possible both mentally and physically to accomplish what would become my greatest physical feat in my life! Each year millions of people are diagnosed with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and many more will never seek help or be properly diagnosed. As a whole there has been great strides in the understanding of PTSD as well as treatments. That said, there still lies an undercurrent of a lack of acceptability and understanding in society. Creating an environment that is welcoming and safe is paramount and that is exactly what this week’s guest has developed. It simply is not enough to recognize that there is a problem. Once you recognize that there is an issue you must take action if you wish to see positive results. Mrs. Hutchinson saw a need for action and she took it. Mrs. Hutchinson is the founder and President of TFRF (Tennessee First Responders Foundation). Her foundation was created after she counseled some crew members work through some difficult times following the loss of two officers. Mrs. Hutchinson found a deep desire to give back and that is exactly what she is doing. This episode is sure to educate and enlighten you, and will stand as a great resource for anyone that is experiencing PTSD or know someone that is. Thankfully, most of us will live our entire lives and never have to make a life or death decision. However, for a select few that measure up to being a part of our military’s finest, they will have to make this life altering decision multiple times throughout their career. This week’s guest, Jim Purdy shares with my listeners the very difficult path to becoming a Navy Seal and the price that he and his colleagues have had to pay. Doing the right thing for the right reason doesn’t mean that it will be easy. In fact, the harsh truth to what Jim and his other Seal members were asked to do would leave anyone with deep scars. Jim’s story of how they made one of America’s largest drug busts amidst intense attacks by the Taliban and a split second decision that saved his guys, but left him with a haunting reality that war is Hell, is sure to touch everyone. The physical and mental sacrifice that our military men and women make every year could never be repaid and every American owes each of them our greatest respect and deepest gratitude. Gena Busby is a mother, a paramedic, a firefighter, an RN (registered nurse) and above all, a survivor. Although we have seen a sizeable shift in female firefighters over the last 10 years I feel it is still safe to say that the career field is large in part male dominated. Gena would only see this as a challenge, not a barrier. At the early age of 5, Gena was facing some difficult life situations that required her to receive therapy and get in touch with her emotions and find ways to process information. This early exposure to self-awareness and development of problem solving would serve her well as she grew older and eventually went into public service. Straight out of high school Gena decided to pursue nursing, but after some setbacks and struggles academically, she decided to go into EMS and then became a Memphis firefighter. However, it was on the ambulance that Gena found her calling. After years of 911 calls the wear and tear finally started to take its toll. Gena tells how therapy received in her childhood years helped her to have early awareness when things started to become an issue and how her foundation was by far her strength. Because of this ability to work through personal problems and work problems Gena has been able to continue on in healthcare and is now an RN at the MED in Memphis. Pursuing something you have a passion for should be the hope and desire of every person. However, sometimes we don’t know exactly what that passion looks like, but we will know what it feels like. Having a desire to help others is really more of a calling than a decision. The underlying understanding of you helping others allows you to stay humble, live bigger than yourself and ultimately find purpose with every action. This can be one of the most rewarding styles of living. This week’s guest left no stone unturned. Straight out of high school Mr. Robert Gibson immediately joined the military and went into the Air Force and after completing one term he chose to get out and return home where he became a police officer. It was during his 9 plus years he spent patrolling the streets and responding to calls that he started to notice a change in his behavior. Sensing that police work may be becoming an issue in his life he transitioned to becoming a firefighter/paramedic. While the change in scenery may have been a welcome sight the harsh truth still remained, he hadn’t escaped some of the depravities of society. Regardless of what your title is, when you choose to put others first and become a public servant you pay a price. Some of that price is the physical wear and tear that the job brings. The other price is the mental wear and tear of seeing some of the worst life has to offer. Robert knew that part of his healing would come from the very types of calls that created the damage. Strangely enough, when we find new ways to process information and mitigate difficult times it not only empowers us to be stronger, but it equips us with skills that we can share with others. I know that you will find the story of this week’s guest to be very inspirational. Each year millions of Americans are diagnosed with some form of PTSD (Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder) and likely millions more that never report symptoms.
While there have been major strides in mental health awareness and treatment,
there are still tons we about the disorder that is unknown or misunderstood.
Unlike a health issue with someone heart where a doctor can have concrete signs
that lead to a proper diagnosis, the brain is a very abstract organ that has a
complexity which matches the population on earth.
Sure there are “common” signs and symptoms, but the blunt reality is, every
person is wired a little different and what works for one person doesn’t mean that
the same thing will work for the next person.
While we as a society may not have all the reasons and rhyme as to why and how
PTSD can impact some but not others, the one thing that we can do as a society is,
be sympathetic and compassionate.
This week’s guest, Ryan Duren, shares with my listeners how two deployments to
the Middle East during the Afghanistan War, left him shell shocked and struggling
for answers.
Tune in to hear how Ryan fought through his depression, anger issues and feelings
of suicide, to go on to find the love of his life and through his new found love they
proceeded to open a business together.
Ryan’s story of patriotism, sacrifice, hardships and never quit attitude will certainly
give you a whole new perspective on what it means to serve your country.

Over the last 4 weeks we’ve heard stories of how people can use their words and
actions to make others feel less than human. The need to highlight such a difficult
topic should speak for itself. My hope is that this series allowed my guest to feel
empowered and hopefully have a positive impact on those that took their time to
listen. We also, took pause to consider the reasons that one might choose to be a
bully.
For this podcast, myself and my producer Derrick, take a few minutes to
breakdown and digest the messages we took away from this past month. We also,
take a minute to look back on our guest that so graciously took part of their day to
share some very sensitive information about their lives.
I hope you found this series to be helpful and I look forward to putting together
more series on this topic in the future.

Part 4 of my series on bullying is one that every parent and child should listen to together. This week’s guest is a long-time friend of mine, a registered nurse for over 20 years, and one of the most caring people I’ve ever known. Mrs. Shannon Fouts shares the heart-wrenching story of how bullying changed her life forever when she learned that her 15 y/o son had taken his own life and how she has tried to find a way to pick up the pieces and continue moving forward. Shannon explains how she has decided to use her own personal tragedy to try and help others and hopefully bring some light to the harsh realities of what can result from being bullied. Listen in to hear what a beautiful soul Reagan was and how he could mask the signs of his depression.
The way we can honor Reagan’s memory and bring about a positive outcome from this incredible loss is to use his story to help someone else and let others know that there is help out there and that your life does, in fact, matter. If you or someone you know may need help please reference the numbers and agencies listed at the bottom of the page.

This week’s episode takes a different view on bullying—most bullying stories center around the victims being bullied, which is perfectly understandable. Unfortunately, I could not do a live interview with a former bully, but I was able to have several conversations with individuals that shared how and why they were bullies when they were younger. All individuals were very forthcoming, and all of them took ownership of their actions.
I know that I left those conversations with a completely different perspective and understanding of how some find themselves in a position where they feel the need to hurt others either psychologically or physically. I ask that you allow yourself to open your mind and take a step back to better understand how these problems come to be and what more we can do as a society to help all involved.
