Ed Stutler: Sergeant United States Marine Corp and Vietnam Veteran.
Never Lose Hope– My Guest, Ed Stutler, Sergeant United States Marine Corp and Vietnam Veteran.
“Marines are built through the ethos of struggle and sacrifice.” ~ General James Jones
Sometimes when you aren’t sure what choice to make you just choose what makes the most sense in the moment. My guest this week had aspirations of becoming an architect after graduating, but when the program at the school he wanted to attend was full he took hard shift and joined the military. Mr. Ed remembers how the recruiter sold him on joining the Marines by saying, “if you want to come home alive then you should join the Marines.” The Vietnam War had been ongoing for 5 years when he decided to enlist and the loss of American life was quickly mounting.
Not sure how his family would take the news Mr. Ed opted to not mention his enlistment to his family. It was in actual basic training when his parents learned that he had joined the Marines. This naturally didn’t go over well but at that point it was too late to change things.
It was only two weeks after basic training when they sent Mr. Ed off to war. He had a brief stop in Japan before being sent to Chu Lai, Vietnam. Once in country he was assigned to being a truck driver. This meant he transported supplies to the troops on the front lines and he found himself in dangerous situations many times. He spent 14 months in country before coming back to the states and it was back home when he started realizing that he was not the same person that he was before he left.
Tune in to hear how Mr. Ed found himself battling depression and eventually becoming an alcoholic before finding real help through therapy and finally coming to terms that he was dealing with PTSD. Mr. Ed now works with the Fisher House Foundation which is a nonprofit organization that houses veterans and the family when receiving treatment at the VA. His journey to recovery and his passion for helping others is certain to pull at your heart strings.
